Apparently, one person can make quite a difference.
Navi Pillay has spent a career defending human dignity. The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize recognizes that work.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay for her work advancing peace and international law.
Born in Durban under apartheid, Pillay became a lawyer confronting discrimination. Her career went on to include judicial roles in South Africa and international courts, and service as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The committee highlighted her contributions to accountability for grave crimes and to stronger legal institutions. These are difficult, unfinished efforts, rather than a tidy claim that justice has won everywhere.
Our take: an individual’s work can matter across decades. If your contribution feels small today, a long view might tell a different story. Apparently, persistence has terrible respect for the word “nothing”.
